The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
