The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.

The president expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full message from the president's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to heart and overhauled the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.

The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the weeks to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Head

Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. Then, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can expect further news as development continues.
