The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
